Short answer

Cape Town International Airport (CPT) is about 20 km from the city centre, roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive on the N2 outside rush hour. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer, the authorised airport taxi, a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Bolt, a hire car, or the MyCiTi airport bus when it runs. For the least hassle after a long flight, book a private airport transfer to your hotel.

After a long-haul flight, the last thing you want is to work out transport in an unfamiliar arrivals hall. Here is a plain overview of every way to get from Cape Town airport to the city centre, the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, Camps Bay or wherever you are staying, with the pros and cons of each.

How far is it, and how long does it take?

The airport sits east of the city, about 20 km away. The drive is on the N2 highway, then into the city or around the mountain to the Atlantic seaboard. Outside rush hour, the city centre is usually about 20 to 30 minutes away; on weekday mornings and late afternoons the N2 gets busy and the trip takes longer. Camps Bay, Hout Bay, the southern suburbs and the Winelands are further.

Option 1: Private airport transfer

A private Cape Town airport transfer is booked before you fly. Your driver tracks your flight, so an early or late landing is covered, and meets you in the arrivals hall. With us, up to 2 hours of waiting is included if your flight is delayed, we help with your bags and drive you straight to your hotel, guesthouse or Airbnb in our Hyundai H1 with room for up to 8 guests and their luggage.

Best for: families, groups, lots of luggage, late arrivals, first-time visitors and anyone who wants the cost agreed upfront. Ask for the cost of your airport transfer on WhatsApp or see the booking page.

Option 2: The authorised airport taxi

Cape Town International has an authorised metered taxi service with a rank outside the arrivals area. It is a reasonable choice if you have not booked anything. Use the official rank and agree on the route before you set off.

Tip: politely decline anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a lift. Official transport waits at the rank or has your name on a board.

Option 3: Uber or Bolt

Ride-hailing apps work well in Cape Town. At the airport, pickups happen at a designated e-hailing pick-up area in the parkade, not at the arrivals door, so allow a few minutes to walk there with your bags. Uber’s own airport page has the current directions. Always check the car and number plate match the app before you get in. At busy times there can be a wait or surge pricing.

Option 4: The MyCiTi airport bus

The MyCiTi A01 route has run between the airport and the Civic Centre in the city, with connections onwards. In October 2026, MyCiTi’s own airport page says the airport service is temporarily suspended, so check the MyCiTi website or app before your trip. When it runs, it is good value for light travellers heading to the city centre.

Option 5: Hire a car

All major car hire companies have desks at the airport. A hire car gives you freedom, but you will drive on the left, navigate after a long flight and pay for parking in town. Many visitors prefer to relax on arrival and hire a car later, or hire a driver for the day for the big outings.

Is there a bus from Cape Town airport to the city?

The MyCiTi A01 bus has linked the airport with the Civic Centre in the city. In October 2026, MyCiTi’s own airport page says the service is temporarily suspended, so check the MyCiTi website or app before you rely on it.

Where do I find Uber or Bolt at Cape Town airport?

E-hailing pickups use a designated pick-up area in the airport parkade, not the arrivals kerb. Follow the airport signs and the directions in your app, and check the number plate before you get in.
