How much does a private driver cost in Cape Town?
It depends on the day you choose (City and Cape Peninsula, Cape Point, the Winelands or an airport transfer), how many guests are travelling (up to 8 in one vehicle) and your date. Choose those three on our booking page and your price shows straight away. Hermanus, Garden Route trips and groups of more than 8 are quoted on request. See the full price guide or WhatsApp us for a quote.
Is the price per person or for the whole group?
The price is for your whole private group, in a Hyundai H1 that seats up to 8 guests. The day price covers up to 4 people, with a set amount for each extra person; choose your trip, guests and date on our booking page to see your group’s total. For more than 8 people we quote a group tour. Ask for your group’s price.
Can we book fewer hours?
Need fewer hours? No problem — you can finish early; the day rate stays the same whether you use all 8 hours or fewer. Ask on WhatsApp.
Is a private driver worth it in Cape Town?
Yes, if you want to see a lot in a short time: a private driver-guide turns Cape Point, the Winelands or the city into one relaxed day with no navigating, parking or drinking-and-driving worries. You choose the stops and the pace, you’re collected from your accommodation, and a local plans the route around traffic, weather and crowds. For a family or group of 4 the day price is shared, so it often costs less per person than you’d expect; see your price in 3 steps. See the Cape Point tour or message Dominique on WhatsApp.
What is not included in the price?
Entrance fees, tolls, parking, activities, meals and drinks are not included unless your quote says so; your private vehicle, driver-guide and fuel are. That means tickets for places like Cape Point or Boulders Beach are paid separately. Your quote lists exactly what is covered. Ask on WhatsApp.
How do I book, and is there a deposit?
Send your dates, group size and ideas on WhatsApp (+27 69 998 1525) or through the booking form, and we reply with a personal itinerary and quote. You pay by secure Yoco card link: a 50% deposit for bookings made 30 or more days before travel, or in full within 30 days. Plans changed? You can move to another day if you tell us at least 7 days before (no refunds); see the booking terms. Book on WhatsApp.
Is Private Driver Service Cape Town well reviewed?
Yes: Private Driver Service Cape Town is rated 5.0 on Tripadvisor from 51 reviews and received the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice 2025 award. It is family-owned, with a team of professional driver-guides led by founder Andre, and Dominique handles bookings. Guests often mention punctuality, local knowledge and quick replies. Planning your days
How many days do I need for Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula?
Plan at least 3 full days, and 4 or 5 if you can: one for the city and Table Mountain, one for Cape Point and the Peninsula, and one for the Winelands. A spare day helps because the Table Mountain cableway closes in strong wind, so your driver can swap the days around. Garden Route trips add several days on top. Try the trip cost calculator or see our sample itineraries.
How long does a Cape Point tour take?
A private Cape Point and Peninsula tour is a full day of about 8 hours, collected from and returned to your accommodation. Cape Point is roughly 65 km from the V&A Waterfront, a little over an hour’s drive without stops, and most days also include Boulders Beach penguins, Simon’s Town and Hout Bay. See the hour-by-hour Cape Point itinerary or the Cape Point tour.
What’s the best way to do the Winelands without drinking and driving?
Hire a private driver-guide for the day, so everyone in your group can taste while a sober local does the driving. A private Winelands day covers Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek for up to 8 guests, with tastings and lunch planned around what you like. See the Winelands tour or message Dominique on WhatsApp.
Is it safe to self-drive in Cape Town, or should I hire a driver?
Many visitors self-drive in Cape Town without problems, but a private driver removes the stress of unfamiliar roads, parking at busy sights and deciding which areas to avoid. Your driver-guide knows local roads and conditions, collects you door to door, and lets everyone enjoy wine tastings safely. It’s worth it most on the long Cape Point and Winelands days. Ask Dominique on WhatsApp.
Can we plan our own itinerary?
Yes. Every day is private, so you can follow one of our routes, mix them, or send your own list of places and we plan the timing. Many guests arrive with a rough idea and we fill in the rest. Start with the trip cost calculator or send us your ideas on WhatsApp.
Do you have German-speaking guides?
Yes, on request. Our driver-guides are English-speaking, and a German-speaking driver-guide is available on request, so ask for one when you send your dates. Private Driver Service Cape Town is family-owned with a team of driver-guides, and every day is private, so the commentary and pace are set around your group. Just message Dominique on WhatsApp.
Can you take a group of more than 8 people?
Yes. The Hyundai H1 takes up to 8 guests, and larger groups are booked as group tours, quoted on request. Send your destination, the number of people, the main booker plus one other name, whether you need your own branding, and any special requests. Send a group booking request.
Do you do Hermanus and the Garden Route?
Yes. Hermanus works as a day trip or the first stop of a longer trip, and Garden Route journeys run over several days with the same driver-guide. Both are quoted on request for your route and number of days. See the Garden Route page and the Cape Town to Garden Route guide, or message Dominique on WhatsApp.
Seasons, wildlife & roads
Is Chapman’s Peak Drive open?
It depends on the day: Chapman’s Peak Drive is a toll road that often closes for rockfalls, strong wind, heavy rain, maintenance and events, sometimes for weeks at a time. Check the live status on the official Chapman’s Peak Drive site before you go. If it’s closed, your Cape Point day still goes ahead on another route. See the Cape Point tour.
When is the best time to see whales in Hermanus?
Southern right whales visit Hermanus from about June to November, and August to October is usually the best time to see them. In season they often come close enough to watch from the Hermanus cliff path, without a boat. A Hermanus day is quoted on request. Ask about a Hermanus day.
When is the best time to see the penguins at Boulders Beach?
You can see the African penguins at Boulders Beach all year round, because the colony lives there permanently. Early morning is usually quieter than midday. Entry is a SANParks ticket, paid separately, and Boulders fits easily into a Cape Point day.
What are Cape Point’s opening hours?
In summer (from 1 October) the Cape Point gate is open 06:00 to 18:00 and the Flying Dutchman funicular runs 09:00 to 17:30. Winter hours are shorter, so check the official Cape Point site before your trip. Your driver times the day so you reach Cape Point before the tour-bus rush. See the Cape Point tour.
When is the best time of year to visit Cape Town?
November to March is the warm, dry summer and the busiest season, so book your driver early; April to May is often calm and mild. June to August is the rainy, green winter, when the whale season begins. Every season has good days, and a flexible plan helps around wind and rain. Tell us your dates.
Cruise passengers & airport
Can I do Cape Point and be back for my cruise ship?
Yes, on a normal port day a private Cape Point day fits comfortably, because the route is planned around your ship’s all-aboard time. Cape Town’s cruise terminal is at the V&A Waterfront, about 65 km from Cape Point, and your driver keeps a time buffer for traffic. Send your ship, date and all-aboard time and we plan the day backwards from it. WhatsApp your ship details.
How much is an airport transfer from Cape Town airport to Camps Bay?
For Camps Bay, WhatsApp us where you’re staying and we send the exact price. For the City/CBD, the Winelands and further, choose Airport transfer on our booking page and your one-way price shows straight away. Camps Bay is about 32 km from Cape Town International, roughly 35 to 50 minutes off-peak and longer in rush hour. Your flight is tracked, your driver meets you in arrivals and up to 2 hours of waiting on arrival is included. See airport transfers or WhatsApp your flight details.
